Red Top Rye is a Kentucky straight rye whiskey aged seven years and bottled at 105 proof. It is made from a 100% rye mash bill with no corn or malted barley, which is unusual for Kentucky. The brand dates to the late 1800s, when Ferdinand Westheimer built it into a pre-Prohibition favorite. Julian Van Winkle III briefly revived it in the 1990s as a 15-year single barrel, and Old Commonwealth now owns the rights and has brought it back. This small-batch release was sourced to match Westheimer’s standard of bold, uncompromising whiskey. It is said to pair well with intensely flavored dishes, with peppermint and dark fruit notes.
