Southwest France is home to a plethora of unique and particular wine appellations. Areas just a few miles away from one another might grow entirely different grapes, have vastly different soil composition or specialize in diverging winemaking practices. While many of these individual enclaves create solid wines at head-turning prices, the captivating blends of Minervois stand out, especially when you look at the relationship between price and quality. The red wines of Minervois almost always incorporate Carignan, the workhorse grape of southern France with its high acidity and forward tannin. Due to this variety’s edgy nature, however, the Minervois appellation only allows up to 40% Carignan in a given wine. While winemakers incorporate different percentages of grapes like Grenache, Mourvedre, Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot to fill out the blend, the key to great Minervois is the presence of Syrah.
